Category: Cichlids
Global Region: Central America
Distribution: Costa Rica, Panama
CARES Status: Endangered
Collection Point: Rio Lari in Costa Rica
Genetic Line: F2 Second Generation
Year Acquired: 2025
Acquired at the January SCTFS Multi-club swap meet purchased from the NECA table of donations from Tangled Up In Cichlids. Very shy fish ~2" began coming out with more confidence when I added some wild type swordtails as dither fish.
Species Spawned: Yes
Timing is key. As I watched this pair gain confidence and guard the terra cotta cave they claimed, I went off on a 10 day vacation. Fortunately I came back to a nice group of hungry free swimming fry.
Have Reared Fry? Yes
I left the pair guarding the parents in the heavily planted 40 gallon tank with a few wild type swordtails. Not all survived, but a small group of ~10 have grown to ~1" during the first 5-6 weeks being fed on BBS.
Young fish available? Yes
